This is a small collection of five games you can use to promote turn taking and collaboration in the classroom.

Preparation
Before starting the games, you need to brainstorm language which the children will need in order to instruct each other and manage the game. Some possibilities are:

• My turn

• Your turn

• Let's go

• You / I won

• You're out

• Play again…

Tickum - tackum
This game is from Iran and is for two players.

• The children stand about three metres apart from each other.
• They then take turns to shout 'tickum' and 'tackum', one shouting 'tickum' and the other replying 'tackum'.
• As they respond to each other they place their feet, heel to toe and advance forward towards their opponent.
• The child who is the last to fill the gap with their foot is the winner.
• The chant can be changed with days of the week, months of the year, sequence of numbers, etc.

Ram, ram, rip
This is a game from Indonesia and Malaysia. It can be played by up to four or five children. It is a finger catching game!

• One child holds out their hand, palm up and the others place their first finger to rest on the palm.
• She then chants the rhyme. On 'rip' she closes her hand attempting to catch the fingers.
• Those who are caught are out of the game. The last remaining player is the winner.

Rhyme:
Ram, ram
Ram, ram
Ram, ram
Rip!

The words of the rhyme can be changed to prepositions:
In, on
Under, behind
In, on
Out!

Match my feet
This game is from Zaire. It can be played in small or large groups of children and is fun for working on rhyme and movement.

• All the children stand in a circle.
• The first child claps a rhyme which all the others copy.
• The child then dances to the rhyme and chooses a child to copy her.
• If that chosen child can then repeat the dance to the rhyme, they become the 'star'.
• The game continues in this way with a new dance movement each time.
• The chant can be changed with new chants made up by the children.

Rhyme:

Just like me

North, south, east and west
Four children are given a card each to hold (with four different sounds that you want them to practise) and they go to stand in north, east, south and west labelled corners of the classroom.

• The rest of the children are given a flashcard with a word which has been pre- taught. Children go to the corner containing the sound of their word.
• Check the groups.

Noisy letters
Give all the children a card with a sound that you want them to practise, and ask the children to read and then hide it behind their backs.

• All the children stand and continuously make the sound of the phoneme represented by the letters on the card.
• They then walk around the classroom and group together with other children who are saying the same phoneme.
• The children then turn over their cards and check together that they have the same written sound

Вот уже совсем скоро Новый Год: новые планы, цели и масса незабываемых впечатлений! Но каким был 2018 год для ваших студентов? Давайте вместе оглянемся назад и вспомним самые яркие события уходящего года:

The most memorable moment of this year

Шаг 1. Предложите студентам выбрать самое запоминающееся событие, которое произошло с ними в уходящем году.

Шаг 2. Раздайте каждому студенту карточку, на которой они должны нарисовать что-то, связанное с этим особенным моментом.

Шаг 3. Соберите карточки и, заново, распределите их среди группы.

Задача каждого студента – расшифровать рисунок и рассказать, почему это событие было запоминающимся для его автора. Чтобы усложнить задание, попросите учеников определить еще и автора рисунка.

В конце каждый студент должен рассказать, что имел ввиду под своим рисунком.

The end-of-year review

Материалы: questions

Шаг 1. Подготовьте раздаточный материал, распределив его на отдельные вопросы.

Шаг 2. Каждый студент получает один вопрос, который связан с оценкой 2018 года. Таким образом, у всей группы будут разные вопросы.

Шаг 3. Затем студенты, в стиле “speed dating”, в парах задают друг другу свои вопросы. На каждое обсуждение дается 2 минуты. После этого, участники меняются партнерами, но задают все те же вопросы. Предупредите студентов, чтобы они делали заметки о том, какие ответы дают их собеседники.

Шаг 4. После того, как все студенты побеседуют друг с другом, попросите каждого их них рассказать об одном студенте, чей ответ был наиболее впечатляющим.

Thank you notes

Получать подарки любят все, но и благодарить за них тоже нужно уметь.

Шаг 1. Попросите студентов вспомнить самый ценный подарок, который они получили за прошедший год.

Шаг 2. Сообщите студентам, что теперь они должны письменно поблагодарить этого человека. Раздайте студентам шаблон письма благодарности, который они должны дополнить своими идеями.

Предупредите, что само название подарка они не должны упоминать в письме, а использовать только слово «present».

Шаг 3. Закончив письмо, студенты обмениваются своими работами. Их целью является определить, какой все-таки подарок описывается в письме.

Fortune-telling

Шаг 1. Раздайте каждому студенту карточку для предсказаний.

Шаг 2. Предложите студентам побыть в роли «ясновидящих» и написать предсказания о том, что произойдет с их одногруппниками в следующем году.

Каждое предсказание должно быть адресовано одному человеку, напр.: You will have a very pleasant experience. Конечно-же, поощряйте студентов предсказывать только позитивные события и быть креативными в их выборе.

Шаг 3. Соберите предсказания, и хорошо перемешав, дайте студентам выбрать свое «будущее». Затем, студенты по-очереди и вслух читают, что принесет им следующий год.

Animation. "Soar"

Работать только по учебному пособию - достаточно рутинная и малоэффективная работа, неспособная надолго объединить детей одного класса/группы с разными интересами, "убивает" мотивацию к учебному процессу и языку как таковому. Творческие "муки" любого увлеченного преподавателя состоят в том, чтобы постоянно находить приемы для "разбавления" этой скуки яркими красками. В этой заметке предлагаю рассмотреть мультфильм Soar ("Полет") как небанальный материал для развития большинства навыков на английском и охвата широкого круга увлечений. Также, работа с одним мультиком может быть выполнена в течение 2-3 занятий.

Жанр: приключения

О чем: маленькая девочка помогает крошечному мальчику улететь домой, пока не поздно. 

Аудитория: дети от 11 лет, подростки, взрослые.

Уровень языка: elementary и выше.

Цели: развитие навыков говорения, письма, критического мышления на английском. 

Приемы, которые могут использоваться как план урока: 

#1. Описание, используя глагол TO BE, Present Continuous, а также словарь с эмоциями. Например: 

• I can see a girl. Her name is Mara. She is interested in planes. Mara is trying to set her plane flying. She is sad. Suddenly a (5-inch) boy drops down from the sky. They are scared. Mara is taking a photo of Lucas. He is a pilot. He is flying his plane.

#2. Косвенная речь при составлении диалогов и реплик персонажей. 
Например на секунде 0:50:

Mara: "Ouch! What's this?"
Lucas: "Hey! Stay away! I'm not afraid of you!"

Mara: "Who are you?"

Lucas: "I'm the pilot. I gotta go. Oups! My plane! Ah! See! They are flying and leaving me alone...".

#3. Пересказ событий от лица персонажей: Мары (девочки) или Лукаса (пилота).

#4. Прогнозирование событий, используя Future Simple. 

Например:

• Mara and Lucas will become grown-ups and stay friends forever. They will travel to/discover /explore many interesting places together. 

#4. Работа в группах: составление и ответы на вопросы.

Например:

• How old is Mara? How tall is Lucas? Whom does the bag belong to?/Whose bag is this? What is there in the bag?

#5. Развитие навыков критического мышления. Название анимации – «Soar». Какие еще синонимы есть к этому слову? Как вы думаете, подойдет ли какой-нибудь из них лучше в качестве названия? 

#6. Творческие и усложненные задания:

• напишите сценарий к истории, добавив повествование, сценические ремарки и реплики персонажей; 
• сделайте постер для рекламы мультика; 
• составьте инструкцию по изготовлению бумажного самолетика; 
• опишите, как работает самолет.

Желательно в начале занятий ознакомить учеников с лексикой и конструкциями, которые будут использоваться на уроке. Когда основной материал усвоен, то можно воплотить еще несколько идей из разных областей, что представлено на фото (увеличивается).

Конечно же, речь не идет о том, чтобы заниматься другими предметами на занятиях по английскому. Но этот список разнообразит стандартные упражнения, а слова, выражения и  грамматику можно изучать в процессе выполнения таких вот творческих заданий.

6 вправ для тимбілдингу

Вправи, що допоможуть побудувати команду.

Сьогодні, мабуть, ніхто не заперечуватиме необхідності формування командного духу й укріплення колективу. Іноді неуспішність школярів у навчанні або їхнє небажання йти до школи пов’язані з тим, що діти не відчувають себе невід’ємною частиною колективу, не бачать спільної мети у діяльності. Дуже часто вже дорослим людям відсутність досвіду групової роботи і неуміння працювати в команді заважають успішно взаємодіяти в колективі, разом зі співробітниками реалізовувати певну діяльність. У таких ситуаціях фахівці радять вдатися до тимбілдингу.

Що таке тимбілдинг? Це робота, спрямована на об’єднання і заохочення членів групи до спільної результативної діяльності. Використовують тут різноманітні засоби і форми роботи: ігри, тренінги та інші заходи, спрямовані на формування командного духу.

Але важливо пам’ятати, що метою тимбілдингу є створення об’єднаної команди, усунення проявів конкуренції та формування відчуття спільної справи. Натомість використання конкурсних вправ неодмінно створює ситуацію, за якої у нас є переможці та переможені. А це може стати причиною непотрібного суперництва. Тому краще зосередитись на тих видах діяльності, що спрямовані на об’єднання групи і колективу.

Пропонуємо скористатися досвідом фахівців у сфері тимбілдингу і обрати серед запропонованих ними вправ ті, що допоможуть об’єднати ваш клас.

1. Цікаві історії

Мета: заохочення учасників до спілкування, обговорення спільних справ, визначення спільних інтересів, формування сприятливого психологічного клімату.

Кількість учасників: 5-25

Тривалість: 30-45 хвилин

Хід виконання:

1. Сформуйте хмару слів, що стосуватимуться вашого обговорення. Наприклад, це можуть бути слова і фрази, безпосередньо пов’язані з початком навчання: «1 вересня», «мій перший день у класі», «дружба», «навчання», «команда», «клас», «партнерство» та ін. Напишіть усі ці слова на папірцях-наліпках.

2. Поділіть дошку на дві частини, на одній з яких розташуйте наліпки зі словами, а другу залиште для того, щоб потім переносити туди папірці.

3. Запропонуйте кожному учаснику обрати слово чи фразу, що надалі задаватиме тему його розповіді, а потім перенести цю наліпку на іншу частину дошки.

4. Після розповіді інші учасники групи, що хочуть розказати історію на таку ж тему, обирають фразу чи слово, діляться своїми думками і міркуваннями, додаючи наліпки до тих, що на дошці.

5. Наприкінці вправи на дошці буде представлено групи взаємопов’язаних фраз і слів, які покажуть, як поєднуються зацікавлення учнів, чи хочуть вони спілкуватися одне з одним тощо.

2. Мене непокоїть те, що в коробці

Мета: єднання учасників групи, обговорення спільних проблем, формування сприятливого психологічного клімату.

Кількість учасників: 5-25

Тривалість: 30-45 хвилин

Хід виконання:

1. Попросіть учасників групи анонімно записати на окремих папірцях одним - двома словами те, що їх зараз турбує або непокоїть: контрольна робота, конфлікт у класі, підготовка проекту, особисті переживання тощо.

2. Усі аркуші складіть в одну коробку.

3. Запропонуйте кожному учаснику навмання обрати аркуш і, описавши занепокоєння іншого, запропонувати свій спосіб розв’язання проблеми.

4. Намагайтеся обговорити всі проблеми.

5. Вправу буде закінчено тоді, коли в коробці не залишиться папірців.

3. Групове відео

Мета: об’єднання учасників групи під час виконання спільної справи, пошук спільних інтересів, формування сприятливого психологічного клімату.

Кількість учасників: 5-25

Тривалість: 7-8 годин.

Хід виконання:

Запропонуйте дітям зробити відеорозповідь. Тематика може бути будь-якою: уроки, перерва, спільний відпочинок або навіть привітання до свята. Головне – щоб справа зацікавила всіх, й усі були залучені до її виконання. Особливого устаткування не знадобиться – можна використати смартфон. Але як цікаво буде потім разом подивитися на результат або переглянути відео через кілька років, наприклад, на випускному. Разом з учнями визначте, хто буде сценаристом, режисером, монтажером, хто й які ролі виконуватиме. Спільна справа створить атмосферу партнерства, дозволить учням розкритися, проявити себе, виявити ті якості, які, можливо, вони ще не демонстрували в класі.

4. Правда / неправда

Мета: знайомство з учасниками групи, об’єднання колективу, формування сприятливого психологічного клімату.

Кількість учасників: 5-25

Тривалість: 10-20 хвилин.

Хід виконання:

Учасники сідають колом. Учитель-ведучий просить кожного учня розказати про себе два правдиві факти і два неправдиві. Неправда має бути схожою на правду. Потім всі по черзі розповідають про себе, а інші учасники групи у цей час мають визначити, що є правдою, а що – ні, та пояснити, чому вони так вважають. Така вправа дозволить учням краще познайомитися, дізнатися одне про одного багато нового, знайти спільні інтереси.

5. Чарівник

Мета: усунення проблемних ситуацій, об’єднання учасників групи, формування сприятливого психологічного клімату.

Кількість учасників: 5-25

Тривалість: 15-25 хвилин.

Хід виконання:

Запропонуйте учням уявити, що вони зустріли чарівника, який може виконати три будь-які їхні бажання, що стосуються шкільного життя: змінити керівництво школи, додати предмети до програми, скасувати контрольні роботи. Обговоріть з дітьми, що їм хотілося б змінити і чому, якими можуть бути наслідки таких змін, що треба зробити для того, щоб здійснити зміни в реальності.

6. Усе робимо одночасно

Мета: виконання спільної справи, об’єднання учасників групи, формування сприятливого психологічного клімату.

Кількість учасників: 5-25

Тривалість: 5-10 хвилин.

Хід виконання:

Дуже проста гра, яка зацікавить не тільки молодших школярів, але й старшокласників, яким іноді теж хочеться жартувати і пустувати. Діти можуть залишатися на своїх робочих місцях, можуть стояти там, де їм зручно. Той, кого обрали ведучим, демонструє певні рухи, які всі мають повторити. Можна додати й музику на свій смак. У ході гри рухи можуть ускладнюватися. Головне завдання – всі учні мають виконати їх однаково. Рухи повторюються, поки всі учасники не виконають їх правильно.

Christmas lesson activities

As Christmas is just around the corner, here are four of my favourite activities to do with a class.  These are not age or ability specific, as I tend to use them with whichever groups I’m working with that year – personally, I find the activities multi-dimensional enough to use throughout the spectrum, but you’ll know your own classes best!

All of these activities can also be used consecutively, to make a complete lesson.

Warmer:

• Draw a nine box grid on the board and write the following letters in the grid, one in each space:  A  /  C  /  H  /  I  /  M  /  R  /  S  /  S  /  T.
• In pairs, SS have three minutes to make as many words as they can using the letters in the grid.
• They can use the letters only once for each word.

(Flexi – put the students into two teams and board race the items up onto the board.  Award points for correct words & correct spellings)

Same but different Christmases (a class survey):

Dictate the questions below:

1. What is your favourite Christmas song?
2. What is your favourite Christmas movie?
3. When do you put up Christmas decorations?
4. What Christmas decorations do you put up?
5. Where do you put your Christmas tree?
6. Who do you give presents to?
7. When do you open your presents?
8. What’s your favourite Christmas food?
9. What’s your least favourite Christmas food?
10. What would you like for Christmas this year?

Students then mingle and ask and answer the questions – making keyword notes of the answers.

Students then get together in small groups (three or four SS) and compare the responses, discussing similarities and differences within the class.

Finally, in their groups, SS use the information to design a poster of “Our Perfect Christmas!”

(Flexi – give the questions to students as a handout.  /  Put students into groups of three and allocate survey questions to each student in the group – e.g. student A asks qus 1-3 – this cuts down survey time / Do the poster creation in two or three larger groups)

NB – this is a good activity for emergent language and to see what the students already know, and to assist with new vocabulary they need.

Christmas Vocabulary Associations (taboo):

Split the class into two teams – A & B.

Give each team the list of vocabulary:

• TEAM A:  SNOW  /  ELVES  /  CHIMNEY  /  CHRISTMAS STOCKING  /  CHRISTMAS PRESENTS  /  DECORATIONS
• TEAM B:  TURKEY  /  REINDEER  /  CHRISTMAS TREE  /  CANDLES  /  CHRISTMAS CARDS  /  WRAPPING PAPER

Teams have to think of four associations for each word:  e.g. CAKE:  sweet / raisins / icing / baked

Teams then face off against each other – they read their four associations and the other team has to guess the key word (i.e. play a game of taboo with the vocabulary).

(Flexi – for larger classes, go with four groups, but have two A groups and two B groups. /  For smaller classes, do the “elicitation” stage with opposition pairs, e.g. One A vs One B etc.  /  For more advanced classes, teams read one association word at a time, with the opposition team getting a decreasing number of points as each extra association is read out – e.g. they get four points if they guess straight off, three if they need two associations, etc etc)

Secret Santa & Secret Gift:

• Give each student a copy of the handout (see pdf download: Telfgeek My Mystery Gift)
• SS think of a gift for another student in the class and write three CLUES as to what it is.  DON’T WRITE WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS!!!
• Stick the clue sheets around the room. All students walk around, discuss what and who, and write their ideas on the bottom half of the sheet.
• Original students then collect their papers and give the gift to the recipient and tell them what it is.

(Flexi – (a) nominate which students should give gifts to which students, but keep it a secret!  (b) write the recipient names on the papers so everyone knows)  (c) nominate which gifts should be given (lower levels – recycle vocabulary from previous units) )

Stirrers and settlers for primary classroom

Teachers need to take many factors into consideration when planning a balanced primary lesson and it is important to plan varied lessons.

• Different kinds of activities to practise the different skills need to be balanced against each other.
• Teachers need to be aware that children have a much shorter concentration span than adults and this will affect the number of different activities we plan for a single lesson.
• Pace and timing are important considerations - at primary level it is better to use short, sharp activities so that children can sustain their attention. If concentration flags, change the activity. Teachers need to plan a balance of ‘heads up' and ‘heads down' activities, alternating the interaction patterns between individuals/pairs/groups and whole-class activities.
• Likewise teachers will need to take into account the learning styles of the different children in the class. Different types of activities will be more suited to visual/ auditory/ kinaesthetic /tactile learners.
• Finally, there is often a need to build in some ‘quiet time' into a lesson. This time helps students as well as teacher sanity. Silent reading or an individual quiet activity can help prepare a class for learning - for example if they arrive after a noisy P.E. lesson. The teacher can take the opportunity during these kinds of activities to deal with classroom admin, check who knows what and/or give individual help where necessary.

Analyse a lesson!
Think about any lesson you have taught recently and analyse the pattern and balance of the lesson. Draw a graph with a horizontal and vertical axis. Write the activities you did with the class on the bottom axis and then plot the noise and activity level. Remember noise is not always negative! Then analyse your graph. Are there any parts of the lesson which needed more ‘stirring' or more ‘settling'? This technique is useful to evaluate a lesson you were not happy with and can help you to pinpoint the areas to plan in greater detail.

Settling students
‘Settlers' are activities which are designed to calm students down and settle them into a routine. Basic classroom management and routines are essential to establish as a pre-requisite for learning. Make sure children know what the routine is when they arrive in class e.g. coats off, books out, files or folders on the desk/under the chair. This is especially important in larger classes or tight working spaces so that valuable teaching time is not lost.

Have a clear signal to get the children's attention and make sure children know what it is. Clap your hands, bang the board rubber, say a signal word clearly and hold up your hand - try not to just shout at your students.

Settler activities

• Vocabulary categorising or brainstorming activities
  For example give children 12 words randomly across the board and ask them to put them into the correct category. Revise familiar lexical sets - clothes, colours, numbers, animals or reinforce the topic you are currently teaching. Ask children to add other lexical items.

• Prompts
  Prepare for listening or speaking exercises by asking children to copy simple prompts from the board. For example, give children a list of five food items to copy and ask them to add five more. Then use the list for simple pair work or listen and tick practice.
• Wordplay activities
  Use matching activities with pictures and words or phrases, anagrams, missing letters, definitions games, jumbled sentences, wordsearches, crosswords. Children love puzzles so get them using their brains!
• Whole-class listening activities or games
  Try doing a simple picture dictation asking children to draw a fun or crazy picture. With very young learners you could dictate a monster or alien to practise colours/parts of the body. With more advanced learners you could build up a crazy scene, practising all the prepositions.
• Read and draw activities
  Give children a short reading text e.g. description and ask them to draw what they read about.
• Stories or storybooks
  Practise your story-telling technique! Alter your classroom if you can for ‘storytime'. Small classes of Very Young Learners can sit on the floor in a semi-circle round the teacher to enable you to exploit pictures and explain meaning. With larger classes make photocopies and enlarge pictures of characters and places to stick up on the board as you tell or read the story.
• Arts and crafts activities
  This type of activity requires thorough preparation! Introducing creative and design elements caters for a wide range of learner. Give clear instructions so that children can settle into the task once they start. Try making class wall displays, mini-projects, a class book or other cut and stick activities.

Stirring students 
Let your students move around as much as possible. In large classes with a lot of furniture this will require some planning. Vary pairs and groups by assigning random numbers. With large classes organise ‘Home' groups so that children move into these automatically for group work.

Encourage movement as much as possible. Even asking children to come out to the front and write an answer on the board provides variety and livens up dull exercises.

Stirring activities

• Mingles or surveys
  Use games which encourage children to act with lots of others if you have the space. Activities such as ‘ Find someone who..?' are a good way of drilling without being boring. Try this game: Animal stickers. Prepare a sticker with an animal name for each child and stick it on their backs. Children walk around asking questions to find out what they are.
• Action/movement games
  Word circle games e.g. throwing the ball to revise interchanges or vocabulary sets are a useful way of getting all children moving and participating. Clapping and clicking games are good for larger classes as they involve movement without too much hassle. Any team games running to the board are extremely motivating because of the competitive element. Mime games are also a good way of getting children moving.
• TPR
  Use TPR as a regular part of classroom routines and activities. For example in listening activities : Put your hand up when you hear ...!
• Songs, chants and raps
  All children are motivated by songs and these kinds of activities are all-inclusive, catering for all levels of learner. Sing songs or say chants faster and faster to really stir them up! A really good example of this can be found in the Learn English kids website with the traditional song ‘If you're happy and you know it'. Or divide your class into groups and allocate parts to sing or sing in a round.
• Drama/acting out
  Puppets or masks can really bring alive a dialogue, role-play or story. Make simple masks out of paper plates for main characters. Bring in realia and props for children to use for acting out e.g. some real money and a bag for shopping. Have a dressing up box of simple props such as hats, glasses etc. Puppets or finger puppets can be used to liven up even the most boring dialogue, especially when accompanied by funny voices!
• Technology
  If you are fortunate enough to have a computer in the classroom exploit the free resources available on the internet fully. The LearnEnglish Kids website provides a huge range of games, songs and stories to liven up and ‘stir' children. Materials: a deck of playing cards.

In a deck of 52 playing cards there are 13 ranks (hearts, queens, numbers...) and four suits (hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds). The ace is the highest in most card games. The suits are diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades. In this game, the jack will be 11, the queen 12 and the king 13.

How to play

Ask learners to sit in four groups.

On the board, write 13 verbs in the infinitive form and number them from one to 13. For example:

• 1 – write
• 2 – buy
• 3 – study

Give a suit (hearts, spades, clubs or diamonds) to each group. Ask them to shuffle and deal all the cards face down.

Each learner now has cards with numbers, and each number corresponds with a verb on the board. They must think of a question containing this verb to ask the other learners in their group, but they must wait for the game to begin before they ask their question.

The game begins with the learner who has the ace. The learner places the card in the centre and asks their question to all the learners in the group.

The question must be an open question:

• Where do you study?

Closed questions, which can be answered with yes or no, are not allowed in this game.

• Do you study here?

Allow three or four minutes for asking and answering open questions. Circulate in the classroom and offer help.

The learner who has the card with the number two takes the next turn.

Game 2: Guess my picture

Before the class: Take the course book and find two different pictures. They should be on different pages.

How to play

Ask learners to work in pairs. Ask Learner A to look at one of the pictures in the course book you have previously chosen without showing it to Learner B.

Learner B can ask up to 15 yes/no questions using the present simple to get as much information as possible about the picture. 

• Is there a man in the picture?
• Does the man look happy?

Learner B can try to guess Learner A’s picture in their own course book at any point during the exercise, but they can only have five wrong guesses.

When Learner B has found the picture or guessed incorrectly five times, it is Learner A’s turn to guess Learner B’s picture.

Game 3: Score a goal

Materials: Two different pieces of coloured chalk or pens for your two teams.

How to play 

On the board, draw a football pitch with a centre line and two football goals.

A player must make three moves to score a goal.

From the centre line and towards the football goals write the numbers one, two and three. Put the number one nearest to the centre line and number three nearest to the football goal. Do it on both sides of the pitch.

Also on the board, write all the wh-question words (skip 'whom') and a yes/no option:

Who	does she...?
When	does he...?
Where	do they...?
Which	does it...?
What	do we...?
How	do you...?

Divide the class into two football teams. Ask the teams to choose a name for their team. Then, ask them to choose a captain to come to the front of the class.

The aim is to score as many goals as possible. To do this, the learners must make three moves without making a mistake.

The teacher writes a verb on the board. For example:

• to work

The teacher asks the captain for Team B to choose a wh-word or the yes/no option from the board. For example:

Where

does she...?

To make the first move, the captain for Team A asks a question using the verb the teacher has written on the board (to work) and the wh- word (where) Captain B has chosen. For example:

• Where does she work?
• Where do you work?

Repeat the procedure two more times. If there are no mistakes, Team A scores a goal and it is Team B’s turn.

If the team makes a mistake, they lose a turn and must go back to the centre line.

The teams choose new captains to score the next goal.

Remember to write the team names on the board and keep track of the goals they score.

Game 4: Who is who?

Aim: Guess the hidden identity attached to your back by asking yes/no questions using the present simple tense.

Materials: Sticky notes or scraps of paper with an adhesive.

How to play

Ask learners to each pick a famous person and write the person's name on a sticky note. Ask learners to keep their chosen celebrity hidden.

Ask learners to stand up and attach their sticky note to another learner's back.

When you say 'start', learners mingle and walk around the class for ten or 15 seconds.

After ten or 15 seconds of walking, they will choose the person nearest to them and ask only yes/no questions to try to determine who they are.

• Do I live in Europe?
• Do I work in a hospital?

Learners can keep asking questions until they guess incorrectly three times. Then it is the other learner's turn to guess their identity.

Game 5: Throw the dice

Aim:  Develop communicative skills by asking and answering questions on different topics. This exercise is especially useful to revise different topics for a speaking exam.

Materials: One dice or an online dice.

Before the class

Provide each group with three or four sticky notes.

Write the topics you want to revise on clean sheets of paper. You’ll need as many as topics you want to revise. Put them on the walls of the class.

How to play

Assign a wh- word to each number on the dice and write it on the board for all the learners to see.

• 1 – why
• 2 – where
• 3 – when
• 4 – what
• 5 – how
• 6 – who

Ask learners to work in pairs or in groups of three.

Throw the dice.

When the number appears, point to the board where the numbers and their corresponding wh-words are displayed.

Ask the groups to choose a topic and write a question about their chosen topic beginning with the wh- word that corresponds to that number. For example,

• Group 1 on sports: Why do people practise extreme sports?
• Group 2 on education: Why is it helpful to learn a second language?

Encourage learners to write open questions to generate conversation.

Once they have written their question on the sticky note, ask them to stand up and place the note next to the topic the question refers to.

Throw the dice again and repeat. This time, groups must choose a different topic. They can do this after throwing the dice.

Once you have at least three or four questions per topic, ask learners to stand up in their groups, next to a topic.

Ask them to talk about the questions in groups.

Allow about five minutes per poster. Then ask them to move clockwise to the next topic.
